Nomadism

In 2016 I  was part of  Nomadism -workshop in the Lapland wilderness. The workshop focused on designing and creating items such as shelters, food and utensils suitable for a nomad life style. The starting point for the assignment was to create a nomad scenario what would be the base for designing our shelters. During the workshop we lived in the Lapland wilderness, utilizing and testing and modifying our designs. The outcome of the workshop was presented in Helsinki Design Week where we set up our shelters and spent the night in a park and invited people  to join  the camp.

My scenario was called The Dispossessed Nomad. He had been driven from his home by the rising sea level that made the area uninhabitable. He travels around making his living by doing part-time jobs he can find or alternatively living off the nature whenever iit is possible. His shelter is made of discarded inflatable water toys that create a dome-like structure that can be used in the wild or in an urban environment.

For the design of the shelter I resesarched lots of inflatable structures. I wanted to be able to pitch the shelter without any tools or any ropes that would require something to tie them on to. For the sewing pattern for the fabric I ended up using a classic football for the design consisting of interconnected pentagons and hectagons.
